Podcast Terms Every Beginner Should Know

Why These Terms Matter

Starting a podcast is exciting, but the technical words can feel confusing. If you are new to podcasting, you might hear terms that do not make sense right away. Learning these basics will make the journey much easier and help you understand how everything fits together.

If you have not read our first blog, What is a Podcast?, we recommend checking it out first so you can follow this series from the beginning.

Episode

An episode is one individual recording that your listeners play. Think of it like a single chapter in your podcast series. Every episode adds to the bigger story of your show, and it is how your audience follows along with your content.

Host

In podcasting, host has two meanings. You are the host when you present the show. But you also need a podcast hosting service, which is the platform that stores your audio files and delivers them to apps like Spotify or Apple Podcasts. Without a hosting service, your show will not reach your listeners.

RSS Feed

An RSS Feed is the link that connects your podcast to listening platforms. Once your hosting service creates it, the feed updates automatically. This means you do not have to upload to each app yourself. The RSS Feed makes distribution simple.

Show Notes

Show Notes are the short descriptions that appear with each episode. They often include a summary, links, or resources mentioned during the recording. Clear and helpful show notes make it easier for listeners to know what to expect and to find extra information.

Intro and Outro

Intros and outros are the opening and closing parts of your episodes. They often include music or a short message to welcome and wrap up the show. Having a consistent intro and outro gives your podcast a professional feel and helps build recognition.
